Florida Fun!

Florida Fun!

Hey, y'all! What a weekend! Being in Panama City Beach, Florida, was amazing (see above!). My brother finally got married! It was a beautiful ceremony! (That's really why we were there, but it was a vacation for me, too!) I took a lot of wonderful pictures and most of you have seen them on Instagram, but I thought it would be fun to take a moment and look at all the wonderful times I shared with my family! Have a great week! Stay blessed!

Beach time was of the utmost importance!
Just getting my bronze on! Cheers, sugar!

Janice and Joe wearing their shades on the beach!

Brandon fell asleep while tanning. Always sucking on those fingers!

Those of you who know me, I don't like seafood,
but here I am trying oysters by the half shell!

Here's Aunt Barb doing what she does best... posing
for pictures. What did you think I meant?

Aunt Janice and I at the rehearsal dinner. I tried crawfish that night!

With this ring, I thee wed... Andy and Lauren exchanging vows!

Here we are after the ceremony. Brandon was crying.
He's worse than I am at weddings!

Grandma and Amanda at the reception. I could never
get Grandma to stop talking and take the picture!

Mom and Dad at the recption. He cleans up nice!

The Mother of the Groom dance. Isn't that sweet?

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end...

Schmooey was glad I was home. He missed his daddy.

My darling Courtney!

Today is a sad day for me. One of my dear friends, the lovely and talented Courtney Powell, has to go back to Australia because her visa expires. She's in the process of acquiring an artist visa so she can stay longer, but you know how government bureaucracy works! A week ago she sang at the same showcase I did back in March, and unfortunately I didn't get to see it because I was in rehearsal for Pageant Princess; however, the video became available yesterday and I decided to post it! What's funny is she is singing this song about me (though not really, but it still makes me giggle that she's singing about "Jonathan").

Courtney is known for her pink outfits with polka dots and her pink bow.
Leave it up to her to find a suitcase that matches her sparkly personality!

Check out the video of her other song, "How Lucky Can You Get?" from Funny Lady!

We also had a picnic Sunday afternoon in Central Park with my former castmates and I thought I would post one of the photos:

Aren't we a pretty bunch?

We had such a great time! Garret brought a frisbee and a football. Unfortunately, I had to leave early for yet another rehearsal, but I did manage to get out of having to do any physical activity. HA! I'm definitely going to miss Courtney! But she will be back soon, I'm sure of it, and I'm going to plan her welcome home party! The only requirements are, you guessed it, PINK! Stay blessed!

Happy Birthday, Barbra!

Happy 70th Birthday, Barbra Streisand! This day is a holiday in JonnyLand--not that I actually do anything to celebrate it, although my mother and I once celebrated it with cake and champagne when I was in high school. I suggest celebrating it by renting your favorite Barbra film with someone special. Mine is three-way tie of Funny Girl, The Way We Were and The Mirror Has Two Faces. She has this thing about the number "24" because her birthdate is 4/24/42. Well, her birthday is the same as my late grandfather's, who turned 24 the day she was born! Look at that! I feel pretty special...

Barbra's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I took this picture in 2000!

In other news, I had an exciting weekend of shopping and dining with friends. Yes, I do take a break from work to enjoy my life! Saturday I went to Herald Square and Rockefeller Center to do some shopping for my brother's wedding which is in two weeks! I'm so excited to get to tanning on the white beaches of Florida! Seriously, that's the only thing on my trip itinerary, except for taking time to go to my brother's wedding. Anyway, on Sunday I went to a quaint jazzy brunch at Garage in Greenwich Village with my friend, Maryruth; her sister, Rachel; and their friend, Mary. They sat us right in front of the jazz quartet playing so we got a free show, a big entree, and unlimited mimosas! Here's a few pictures:

The fabulous Iris Onig Quartet playing some jazz favorites!

Get it, girl! The first sip...

Gotta save that orange slice--in the mimosa!

The quips with the waiter began...

We all roared. She's here all week, folks! Try the veal!

As you can see, we had a great time! But I guess it's back to work. Still in rehearsals for Pageant Princess. Still learning my Cole Porter songs for the May 26 show. And learning my lyrics for my one-man show on July 5th! And taking my singing, dancing and acting lessons on top of that! It's a busy career, but so rewarding when you make people laugh! Better get back to business! Have a great day! Stay blessed!

Happenings in 'Central Park'... And Other New York City News!

Happenings in 'Central Park'... And Other New York City News!

Hello, friends! I hope everyone is doing well! I have been super busy! I finished Central Park last Sunday, and I must say, it's definitely an experience to remember! I posted a picture of our wonderful cast (see above) during one of our performances. I'm going to miss all those smiling faces! But we're all planning a party in the real Central Park next weekend so I'm looking forward to that!

From L to R: Sam Schrader, Garret Dill, myself and Jeff Wojcicki singing "Brooklyn."

Courtney Powell holding me tight.                  Lauren Montella staring into my eyes.

In other news, I have started rehearsals on my next show, Pageant Princess: The Musical. I started reading through the script the other day and this show is going to be a lot of fun! It's so funny and silly! Just the kind of show I've been wanting to do! I also met with my musical director/arranger for my one-man show this week. We finalized the song list and he's started working on putting my charts together for my 7-piece band! This really is going to be a great show! I know it's my own show, so of course I'd be plugging it, but I sincerely mean this is going to be awesome. The band is going to rock, and yours truly will be shticking it up on the mic!

I'm also rehearsing my songs for the Cole Porter show at the end of May. Gonna be doing some Fred Astaire-style tapping in my tuxedo. I may even have a top hat and cane! I just hope I don't fall off the stage. Whoopsie. I guess what I'm saying is, don't sit at the first few tables! Just kidding... As always, check out my LIVE page for more information on all my upcoming appearances!

I just wanted to update you all on what's going on with me in New York! So busy, but so blessed! I never thought I would ever be able to get started here in the Big Apple, but God can do anything! Jeremiah 29:11, folks! Have a great weekend and I'll catch up with you soon!

Central Park: Opening Night Roundup!

Central Park: Opening Night Roundup!

Hey, friends! We survived opening night! You should have been there! What an experience! That's all I can say... I think it's fair to point out at this point that the show is very much a revue-style musical. It's mostly about the songs, which have no relation to one another, and there is NO plot to the show; however, if you want to learn about random facts and history about Central Park, you might find it interesting. You're probably asking yourself why I'm being so forthcoming about this. Well, I was added into the show midway through rehearsals. I almost walked out the first day, but I fell in love with my cast and had to stay. I also met my new arranger, Benet, (far left in the picture above, warming up with the band) who saved our show from a complete disaster by improving our music. I believe everything happens for a reason so I'm happy for the experience. We all joked how low we would go to secure an off-Broadway credit on our résumés! We all have one bad show, I guess.

In other news, more details have been confirmed for the Cole Porter show. It now has two casts for two performances. I'm scheduled for the Saturday, May 26 performance at 9:30 p.m. I got the two songs I'll be singing yesterday and I've started to learn them! Head on over to my LIVE page for information and to check out the press release for the show, which was on BroadwayWorld.com, so look out world! The first of many mentions on that site! I auditioned for a new musical called Pageant Princess: The Musical. It's a comedy poking fun at all the stage moms out there and the little princesses. It would be a fun show to be in. We'll see what they say!

More details are being confirmed for my one-man show in July. As soon as I can, I will post information on how you can get tickets. It's going to be a great show! I'm finding some really terrific songs, putting together a great band, and writing it. I know you'll want to come see it!

I'm also working on my second article that's going to be published in Young Scholar's in Writing in January. It's going to take a lot of research, but I can handle it! Little by little I'm doing what I've always wanted to do. Trying to stay focused, balanced and positive. I'm meeting a lot of people and making wonderful new friends. If any of you out there have doubts about following your dreams, don't! I'm living proof that with God's grace, you can accomplish your dreams! It's not a cliché! Have a blessed day!

Sick and the City...

I wish it were as glamorous as Sex and the City, but I'm sick! I got a cold last week and subsequently lost my voice. In some ways I'm glad it happened this week because I finished my performances at The Duplex, but it stinks because my other show opens Monday! The good news is I can tell it's getting better. I'm getting rid of the congestion and I can sing again, albeit two octaves lower than normal. I tell everyone my voice sounds like the female Bea Arthur. *insert drum kick here*

I posted this video of my friend, Jake McKenna, singing "Sensitive Song" as host of the Bound for Broadway showcase. This is how he gets the crowd warmed up, and boy, does he do a great job or what?! So deliciously inappropriate. It helps to laugh when you feel like crap! I've asked him to open my one-man show in July and he's graciously accepted. I couldn't be more happy! I'm finalizing all the details for my show and can't wait to tell you all of the other surprises I have in store! I've started the song selection which means sifting through 5,191 songs in my iTunes library and all my sheet music. Oy vey certainly applies here...

I got my official official acceptance letter yesterday from New York University. At this point it was a formality since the department already accepted me, but the university had to make sure I had all my required documentation... and check the fact that I earned a bachelor's degree. That's kind of a biggie when you're trying to get your master's degree. HA!

I'm so blessed to have such wonderful family and friends. I always bring it up but it's the truth. I was thinking last night on my way home from rehearsal how God works and weaves people in and out of your life. I'm always amazed. Sometimes you know right away why someone is in your life and sometimes it takes awhile to figure it out, but when you do, there's a reverential awe of how marvelous He works in our lives. Sort of the same way you care and pray about someone even though you don't know why. God never ceases to amaze and delight me.

I hope you all have a wonderfully blessed day! We will catch up soon...

New York City Living!

Hi friends! It has been a month since I've updated my blog! How scandalous! Life has been great and VERY interesting recently. I've been busy auditioning and performing, which is always a blessing to be doing what I love to be doing, but I also recently found out that I was accepted to New York University to work on my Master of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre Writing! It is the only degree of its kind in the world and they only take about 24 people, so it was very competitive! I had to complete a lengthy application, a formal interview and an audition! These people don't mess around! But I was accepted and that's the most important thing! I start in the fall and it's a two-year program. I've been waiting to go back to school for three years, so I think I'm ready!

I've been singing the past couple weeks down at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre in Greenwich Village. It was so much fun! Just the fact I could sing whatever I wanted made it an even better experience. I'm used to singing what I'm told to sing in the shows I've been a part of. After awhile it gets old singing the same songs over and over. With these gigs, I get to sing what I want, and it is a lot of fun!

Singing It's Time at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre in Greenwich Village. Sorry, it's a little blurry, but we weren't allowed to use flash photography!

I posted the videos from the show on my VIDEO page so go check them out! Just scroll through the arrows to see the different songs. Don't forget to check out my LIVE page with new information on upcoming performances. Central Park: The Musical opens Monday, April 2 with only four performances, and I'll be singing in a brand new show called Off the Books! A Cole Porter Unpublished Cabaret featuring never-before-heard songs by Cole Porter on Saturday, May 26 at 9:30 p.m. I hope everyone can come! Check it out!

Speaking of video, I posted Dolly Parton singing Backwoods Barbie. It's one of my favorite songs, and it pretty much sums up my life right now. When you move to a city as big as New York, you're definitely going to feel like a fish out of water. To be fair, I have made some wonderful new friends who have made this life transition so smooth and wonderful! But sometimes when I'm out and about, or when someone gives me advice about this, that or the other, I feel out of place. Sometimes I feel people don't give me a fair chance. I think, yes, I do things differently, I say things differently, I believe in different things, but if I can love and accept you, can't you do the same for me? Yes, I know this post just got a little silly, but that's why I like the song because it says, don't judge me by the cover because you will like me if you get to know me. I've always believed that the people who care about you and know you the most would never talk bad about you. It's always the ones who know you least who make assumptions about you. Now that's my Dolly/country wisdom coming through! HA!

On a more exciting note, I'm putting together a one-man show for this summer. It's in the very early stages of development, but I'm hoping we'll be able to record it for a LIVE album! I'm going to need your help, so get ready to support this project! I'm going to start a campaign to raise money for this show and recording. Look for a post in the very near future with information on how you can donate and receive great prizes! There's so much going on! I'm so happy and so blessed to be here doing what I love to do! Thanks for all your prayers and encouragement! I am truly blessed to know there are people I can always count on. God has certainly provided some great people in my life! Thank you!

Hello, New York!

Hi, friends! What a busy few weeks! Since my last post, a lot has happened in my life. After a lot of soul searching and careful consideration, I moved to New York to break into the Big Time! Granted, there are a million other people trying to do the same thing, but I have quickly realized I may never know what could happen if I don't step out and take a risk.

I sold my car, packed what I could into a UHAUL trailer, and my dad and I headed east! It took almost three days with the stops we had to make along the way (first, my mom's house in Branson to pick up a few things and say goodbye, and second, our friend's house in Philly). I found my roommates online (before I left town) where we Skyped and they showed me my room! Isn't that hysterical? The joys of technology! As soon as I arrived and my new roommates helped me unload, my Dad checked out the apartment, determined I wasn't going to be living in squalor (I mean, why would I anyway?), and decided to turn around and head back to Kansas City!

There I was in my room with all of my stuff scattered everywhere, and it hit me--that initial fear when you take a big leap! I sat on my bed and thought, "What the hell did I just do?" I have a tendency to act impulsively, for those who don't know me. HA! After the first few days, it began to feel routine and then it hit me--I'M LIVING IN NEW YORK! I felt like Peter Griffin with a "Holy Crap!" moment. I'm starting my new life!

I'm living in a beautiful section of Harlem, right next to a park that houses Alexander Hamilton's home, The Grange, and down the street from the Harlem School of the Arts. It's been a whirlwind trying to get everything unpacked and trying to audition! I've already had my first audition, and I have three more in the next few days!

Last Saturday afternoon I went with my cousin and her friend to see the new revival of The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess starring Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis! I chose a cip from their recent performance of my favorite duet on The View. Such a breath-taking performance. It was sold out so all I could snag was Standing Room Only which was only $27. My cousin bought her tickets the day before at TKTS, so it was a little more pricey, but they still managed fifth row orchestra. I'm saving my pennies so I didn't mind standing!

Like I said, I have auditions tomorrow, Saturday and Monday afternoons. I should probably get to practicing! And for the record, the first audition--the one I call the "practice" audition--went a lot better than I expected. You line up and go in one at a time. The whole moment took less than a minute--easy squeezy! We're taught New Yorkers are so mean and rude, but they were very nice and thanked me for singing Stevie Wonder--which is what they asked for even though everyone else sang showtunes. Way to go, Jonny, for doing what they asked you to do! Novel concept!

Thank you to those who have prayed for me, supported me and encouraged me to get out there and follow my dreams. I have wanted to be on Broadway since I was a little boy standing on my grandmother's bed, pretending it was a stage and belting out showtunes! Such good memories! Talk soon and God bless! :)

Travelin' Man!

Hey friends!

I'm so sorry it's been so long since I've updated my website! We finished our season in December, and I've been a lazy bum! My grandma came up to Branson for Christmas, spent some time in Dallas, then I went up to St. Louis for New Year's with my cousins! For the past two weeks I've been in Kansas City visiting my dad and my friends from college! I finally had a chance to catch up on some wonderful movies. I saw The Artist, Joyful Noise, and The Iron Lady.  Loved all of them! I highly recommend them to everyone!

I had to show you this clip of Dolly Parton singing her song "From Here to the Moon and Back" from Joyful Noise. She stopped by David Letterman last week and did a beautiful job! She had a string section accompany her, and it really made me tear up!

I finished my first play, Single & Thirty, about my best friend, Jennifer. It's just a short one act play, but it's pretty crazy! You never know--you might see it on the stage before you know it! In the meantime, I hope to get off the couch and be a little more productive! I've been watching Law & Order: SVU marathons on USA. The show has been on since 1999, but I've never watched it! I'm hooked--especially the theme song! It's so deliciously early '90s...

Have a great weekend! I'll catch up with you soon!

Stage Fright!

Alfred Hitchcock is a film legend! There aren’t many more accolades anyone could give him! He’s simply a genius when it comes to filming dark movies without being too gory and gross! You also can’t forget the melodrama—remember, I like melodrama! In part two of my series on film noir, I’ve chosen Stage Fright (1950) starring Marlene Dietrich, Jane Wyman and Michael Wilding (Elizabeth Taylor’s second husband!).

Jane Wyman plays Eve Gill, a Royal Academy drama student who’s in love with Jonathan Cooper, played by Richard Todd. The problem is, Cooper is in love with the fabulous stage chanteuse Charlotte Inwood, played by Marlene Dietrich. That’s where the mystery begins…

Cooper runs into Eve and tells her about the tragedy that’s just taken place. Cue the flashback…

Cooper was at his apartment when Charlotte comes over to tell him that she killed her husband so she could be with Cooper forever! Charlotte, in a blood stained dress, is panicked and wants Cooper to run back to her house and fetch her a fresh dress. Problem is, the police don’t know her husband is dead and he takes a big risk going back to her house. When he arrives, he fetches a new dress, but the maid discovers him and calls the police. Now he must hide and Eve is his only hope! Off they go to Eve’s father’s house by the sea. Eve decides to keep Cooper with her dad. She heads back into London to figure out what to do next.

Off she goes to the scene of the crime to find out what she can (where Hitchcock makes his cameo). She doesn't find out anything there and calls her father to find out how Cooper is doing.

While she's on the phone, she notices the detective going into a local pub. She follows the detective into the pub, and using her acting talents, hatches a plan to go undercover as the maid’s cousin to find out all she can about Charlotte Inwood.

The more she uncovers from the detective, Ordinary Smith (Michael Wilding), the more she falls in love with him. She finds herself in a quandary when Cooper returns from her’s father’s house. She must shield him from Smith who considers Cooper the prime suspect.

Eve creates a clever rouse to get Charlotte to spill the beans about the murder. She sets up a microphone in the dressing room that will project their conversation across the entire theatre.

Trouble is, it isn’t the confession she wants to hear. The police bring Cooper to the theatre, but he gets away from the police and hides in the basement with Eve. And if you want to find out the surprise ending, you’re going to have to rent the movie!

Next post features another Hitchcock film starring Grace Kelly and Cary Grant! Stay blessed!

Don't Bother To Knock!

Of all my favorite movie genres, Film Noir happens to be my favorite--with Comedy not far behind. Something about the melodramatic acting (accompanied by the melodramatic musical score) makes for a wonderful evening! Some people like horror films, I enjoy melodrama! For the first part of our series, I chose a rare, dramatic (more psychotic) role played by Marilyn Monroe in Don't Bother To Knock (1952) with Richard Widmark and Anne Bancroft! I reviewed another film with Monroe and Clark Gable last week, but that was a tame dramatic role compared to the mentally unstable performance in this film!

Monroe plays Nell Forbes, a young girl from out West who comes to live with her Uncle Eddie. He works as the elevator operator at the McKinley Hotel in New York City. Noticing some guests needed a babysitter for the evening, Eddie recommends his niece for the job. However, no one knows the trouble she’s about to bring to this family…

In the lobby downstairs, Widmark plays Jed Towers, a crass man who comes to the hotel to talk to his girlfriend, Lyn Lesley, the hotel lounge singer played by Bancroft.

She sent him a “Dear John” letter, but he wants her back. After some quarreling, he leaves and goes upstairs to his room.

Nell puts the young girl she’s babysitting to sleep and starts to go through her mother’s things. She puts on the strange women’s négligée, her diamonds and perfume. She starts pretending she’s a very wealthy woman.

Across the courtyard, Jed notices Nell. Seeing his hopes with Lyn dashed, he decides he might have a fling with this young blonde. He dials the operator for her room. She hesitantly answers, but agrees to let him come over. They chat for awhile until the little girl interrupts them. Needing some fresh air, Nell opens the window and the little girl goes to look at the courtyard below. For an instant, Nell contemplates pushing the girl out the window until a guest across the courtyard screams and the girl gets down from the window. A few minutes later, her Uncle Eddie comes and interrupts her little tête-à-tête and tells her to take off the other woman’s clothes and jewelry.

Suddenly, Nell starts to unravel. She believes Jed is her dead fiancé and falls madly in love with him. Meanwhile, little girl comes in again and interrupts them and Nell won’t have any more of it. She bashes her uncle on the head. While Jed is tending to him, she takes the little girl into the other room and ties her up. The other guests hear the noise and come up to investigate. Jed sneaks out not noticing that the little girl is tied up on the bed. He runs downstairs to talk to Lyn, who’s still performing in the downstairs lounge.

Meanwhile, Nell gets the guests to leave. The mother worries about her little girl and comes to check on her. Discovering her little girl tied up, she fights with Nell, who gets roughed up in the process.

Nell runs downstairs and grabs a razor from the hotel gift shop. The police surround her until Jed and Lyn come to the rescue. They discover Nell was just released from the mental hospital where she was recovering after the death of her fiancé.

The police take her away to the local mental hospital and Jed and Lyn reconcile their differences--happy to be sane—and live happily ever after... Definitely a must-see! Marilyn Monroe gives a tour-de-force performance! Stay tuned for tomorrow's review of Alfred Hitchcock's Stage Fright (1950) in part two of our classic film noir series!

Thanksgiving Roundup!

I know I'm a week late, but I've been super busy at work! I wanted to share my photos and recipes from Thanksgiving! Who knows? You may want to try some of these for Christmas dinner! To get us started, how about a little joke from my friend, Jeremy?

Even the turkey needs some couch time, too!

Went to my sister's house for dinner. Dad's helping out!     Mom was happy with her wine!

I made this decadent Sweet Potato Pecan Cheesecake with Marshmallow Creme topping!

It's easy to make! I found the recipe from this blog and made a few additions. I added 1/2 cup pecans to the filling and 1/2 cup to the topping. I also would have used 1/2 cup sour cream (instead of 3/4) and added more sweet potato and cinnamon. Here's a few photos of what it looks like step by step:

Here's the crust after you bake it to set it.     Here's the cheesecake right before it's baked.

Here's the cheesecake after it's baked ... and with the marshmallow creme topping and chilled overnight.

I was also in charge of fixing a pumpkin pie for mom and the cranberry sauce:

The finished pumpkin pie!                                Cranberries are washed and ready to boil.

Add 1 1/2 cups of sugar.                                          Boil until ready! Chill and serve.

My second grade teacher from Texas, Mrs. Battle, came to Branson with her son for the weekend. She came to my show Saturday night and stopped by my house after the show for some of my famous cheesecake and coffee! So great to see one of my favorite teachers!

Schmooey and I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends! Now it's time to get ready for Christmas and New Year's! Stay tuned for tomorrow's blog about two classic film noirs I watched this week with such icons as Marilyn Monroe, Richard Widmark, Marlene Dietrich and Jane Wyman! Have a blessed day!

The Misfits!

Since my show schedule has been light this week, I decided to see what movies were playing on TCM this week. I've already watched Fire Over England (1937) with Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier, as well as the epic musical, Fiddler on the Roof (1971). As the week goes on I will probably blog about each of those two! But for now I wanted to share you this classic from 1961, The Misfits, starring Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift.

Directed by John Huston, this classic is about Roslyn (Monroe) who goes to Reno to divorce her husband and meets Isabelle (Thelma Ritter) and Guido (Eli Wallach), who introduces her to Gay (Gable). They go out for a drink and then go back to Guido's house for the night. They all develop a friendship but Guido and Gay both fall in love with Roslyn.

Roslyn is beautiful. Throughout all the men who've left her and hurt her, she still maintains her innocence and truthfulness. This movie was Monroe's last and knowing what we know about her life now, you can see how this character really represented her--her hopes, dreams, childlike charm, gentle sexiness.

Roslyn and Gay fall in love. They start a life together. Farming and living a quiet life in the Nevada countryside. One day the gang decides to go into town for the rodeo. There they meet Perce (Clift).

Perce and Roslyn develop a friendship after Perce gets injured at the rodeo. He joins the gang for a night of drinks where Gay invites Perce to join them to go up to the mountains and round up some Mustang horses to sell for feed.

Roslyn doesn't realize what's going to happen to the horses when they're caught. She thinks they'll be sold for cowboys to ride. Gay tells her times have changed and they need the horses to make dog feed. Once she realizes they'll be killed, she convinces Perce to cut loose all the horses. But Gay takes off after the horses on foot and a battle begins between him and a stallion. He eventually tames the stallion. Everyone thinks he's going to kill it, but he lets it go. He tells them he doesn't want anyone telling him what to do--he makes his own decisions on his own time.

They say their goodbyes to everyone and drive off into the night, using the north star as their only light home. It was both Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable's final film. Gable died of a heart attack 12 days after they completed filming; Monroe dying a year later while filming,    Something's Got To Give, which IMDB lists as her final film, even though it was never completed. Truly a great film! It's not available streaming on Netflix, but you might catch a replay on TCM!

Follies on Broadway!

Follies on Broadway!

Yesterday was a wonderful day! My copy of the 2011 cast recording of Follies came early in the mail! If you haven't had the chance to see it on Broadway, the album is sure to please any musical theatre afficiando! The music, the dancing, the acting! It's all so sublime! This is definitely one of Stephen Sondheim's masterpieces!

I decided to post some video from its out of town tryout at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to give you all a preview of what a marvelous spectacle this show is! Here is the opening portion of the show when all the former showgirls arrive at their old theatre for one last reunion before it is torn down to make room for a parking lot. (Note: I did not take these video clips. I'm just sharing them from the person who did!)

Here the ladies decide to recreate their old tap routine with the song, "Who's That Woman?" Notice the younger girls who play their former selves dancing behind them. Very magical!

Elaine Paige does a marvelous version of "I'm Still Here," one of Broadway's most iconic songs. There was a full length on YouTube, but the person who originally posted it took it down. Here's a preview clip from the show's YouTube page.

Rosalind Elias and Leah Horowitz do an incredible job on the "One More Kiss" duet between Heidi and Young Heidi. Elias is an opera legend in her 80s who is making her debut on Broadway. It goes to show you're never too old to make it in a Broadway show!

I definitely want to see the show again before it finishes its limited run in January. They certainly don't make musicals like this anymore! In fact, it's one of the only shows on Broadway now that uses a full orchestra! Most musicals now use less than 15 musicians. Follies has a 28-piece orchestra! Click here if you'd like to order a copy direct from PS Classics! Its street date isn't until November 29, but the company is shipping now! You can also listen to other clips. Have a great weekend everyone!

Technology!

Technology!

Hi, friends! Things are finally starting to settle down a bit! I am so sorry for being gone so long! I've been super busy and sick-- all at the same time! Forgive me for my absence.

I finally received my new iPhone 4S in the mail the other day. I was like a kid on Christmas! For most of you, the iPhone is standard, but for me, a loyal Sprint customer, I am now able to use it on their network! I did, however, have the 3G a few years ago. It was a college graduation present from my brother--which also meant for a brief time I was an AT&T customer. Well, less than a month after I got my phone, the 3GS came out and I was left in the technological dark ages. Needless to say, after I moved to back to Branson, I needed a different phone carrier because at the time AT&T didn't have the best coverage here. I went back to Sprint and used their top of the line Android device instead.

But now I've finally caught up with the rest of the world... for the time being! It's a nice feeling. I love the updates and changes they've made to the iPhone. I've jumped from a 3G (over a 3GS and a 4) to a 4S! The speed, the camera... everything is so fancy schmancy! I love it!

The big kicker--are you ready for this?--is my Dad got one, too! It pained him to even tell me! You all must realize, my dad is a PC--just like the commercial. I'm talking dyed-in-the-wool PC. I remember him telling me as a child in the mid-90s to "NEVER buy a Mac!" Back then, PC was the dominant player in the industry. But now things have shifted, and it was time to get him on board with the rest of the world! He still has a PC laptop, but baby steps, y'all, baby steps.

The picture above is my brother, Andy, and his fiancée, Lauren, at Macy's in New York City! It was Lauren's 30th birthday last week, and he surprised her with a trip to the Big Apple! They were only there for a couple days, and can you believe it, they didn't see any shows because they were "too tired" from Christmas shopping? I know it's a tiring trip--BELIEVE ME!--but who goes to New York and not see any shows? Whatever.

Speaking of shows, our show runs for one more month, and then I'll be on hiatus through winter! I'm planning all my trips to see my friends and family! I hope everyone has a great weekend! Stay blessed!

Christmas season has begun!

Hello, friends! Christmas season has arrived in Branson! All the Christmas shows have opened and the tourists have flocked to town! I have been busy at work! The Christmas show opened Tuesday night, and the audience really loved it! I did three shows yesterday, I have two today and three tomorrow! I haven't had time to update my blog and I apologize! Some days I'm not even sure of the date! My puppy has certainly missed me. He's snuggled next to me on the couch and soaking up some one-on-one time before I have to go to work.

I posted this video of Queen Latifah singing "Hard Times" from her 2004, The Dana Owens Album. I think it's appropriate considering how much work I've been doing! I love her music! I'm going to buy more of her albums to add to my collection. You should check out her music! She also has a new movie with Dolly Parton, called Joyful Noise, coming out next year!

I hope everyone has a terrific Friday and a great weekend! Get out and do something fun! I will talk to you all on Monday!

Simply Della...

I just finished Della Reese's biography, "Angels Along The Way: My Life With Help From Above." It's a few years old, but I found it at Half Price Books and couldn't resist. I remember her from Touched By An Angel back in the day. It's funny because when I was a kid, I thought the show was stupid. As I've gotten older, there are times when that show has really spoken to me--or I should say, God used it to speak to me--and has helped me get through a certain rough patch in my life. Music does the same thing for me. In fact, after finishing her biography last night, I woke up this morning singing this song. I first heard her sing it on Touched By An Angel but couldn't find a good clip of it. Here is the audio from it (above). It's one of those songs you need to sing from your spirit. That's why I love to listen to her sing because she's not singing to show off, but singing from what's deep inside. I try to do this every time I sing, even if I have to force myself when I'm tired, etc.

In other musings, I have finished the documentary about Jerome Robbins. I included a preview clip below:

It's not as extensive as the biography, but does a good job putting names with faces and showing clips of the productions descirbed in the book. It also briefly touches on his relationships, which the book did a better job of documenting. Yes, his work is important, but I think they should have talked more about his love relationships because that was the hardest thing he dealt with. All in all, still a worthwhile documentary.

We are now in the middle of Day 4 of 8. Everything is coming together splendidly. It is going to be a great show! I'm very excited we have such a great cast and crew! I hope you all have a chance to see it. And, if you happen to be in the Ozarks, enjoy the beautiful trees! I can't remember the last time we had such a beautiful fall. The trees should peak this weekend, and I can't wait to see them! Have a great day everyone!

Happy (early) Halloween... part 2!

My good friend, Christy Campbell, and I at our work Halloween party
this weekend. She went as a pirate! Shiver my timbers! :)

Hi friends! I've been very busy in rehearsals getting ready for our Christmas show which opens Tuesday! In fact, I injured my hamstrings yesterday! Aaaaaaahh! The pain! Good news is I feel much better thanks to one of our dancers who had this amazing BenGay-type all natural cream to rub on my legs. Made them feel so much better! I was expecting to wake up in pain this morning, but I feel pretty good! Glory to God! We are now entering Day 3 of 8 of rehearsals... I really can't wait to open this show!

In other news, I ordered a documentary about Jerome Robbins, and it arrived yesterday. I'm (hopefully) going to watch it today when I'm not being used during rehearsals. Jerome was a genius choreographer and director on Broadway creating such wonderful masterpieces as West Side Story, The King and I and Gypsy. He was also a very tortured soul who wrestled with his inner demons his entire life. Very sad story.

What inspired me to check out the documentary was his biography Dance with Demons: The Life of Jerome Robbins" by Greg Lawrence. It's a long book, but it covers his entire life and includes hundreds of interviews! I read it within two weeks, but then again, I'm a book worm and love reading! And on a day like today, grab a good book, a cup of coffee and get cozy. Meanwhile, I gotta go to work! Have a blessed day!

Happy (early) Halloween!

Well, truth be told, I really don't celebrate Halloween. The only thing I like to do is buy heavily discounted candy on November 1st and occasionally dress up for a costume party. Let's face it, after walking door to door as a kid dressed with a sheet over my head (we were 'po), going to one party with my friends is about all the energy I have! Since my co-workers and I are working on our Christmas show, we won't have enough time to actually have a party on the 31st so we always have it early each year. This year I went as the 80s! I put the outfit together out of clothes from my closet. The only thing I had to buy was the wig and borrow the hat. I'd say that was easy squeazy! This picture is of me and my friend, Emerson, who is our drummer in the show! His girlfriend's mom made him a Civil War outfit from scratch! Very impressive!

In other news, my website is offically up and running! I will make minor adjustments over time (as I learn how to add code, et al), but this is the basic premise! I just added a MUSIC page so you can hear songs from my demo until my brand new album comes out next year! I hope you enjoy exploring my site! I will try and post new blog entries daily! In the meantime, bookmark this page! You can also add me on Facebook and MySpace! By adding me, you help me get the word out!

We finished our regular season show yesterday, and for the next eight days I'm in rehearsals for our Christmas show which opens November 1! We've been rehearsing this show since July 5 so I guarantee if you come November 1, the show will be just as good as the last show on December 11! You could say we've had five months of previews!

Here we are performing "Little Drummer Boy." What is Brandt looking at?

I'll be in the dance studio all day! If you're in Branson, come see my show! Hope you guys have a fabulous Monday! Enjoy video of the cast of my favorite new musical, Sister Act, performing "Fabulous, Baby!" on the Wendy Williams Show today! They'll also be performing TONIGHT on Dancing With The Stars so make sure you set your DVR's!

Fall musings... plus Women In Hollywood!

Hi, friends! Hope everyone is having a terrific fall. Here in the Ozarks, the leaves are changing and the air is crisp! Normally, I keep my patio door open to let the breeze in, but today is chilly! We had a nice storm come through over night, and it cooled everything down. I love it when the seasons change--I love seasonality--because it reminds me that life goes on.

Speaking of life moving on, I loved this interview that Elle put together for their Women In Hollywood Awards Ceremony last night in Hollywood. My fabulous Barbra Streisand was honored with the L'Oréal Paris Legend Award. I don't know what it means, but they interviewed her with all the other honorees, and it's just so wonderful. Hope you enjoy it!

In other news, last week of shows for the regular season! We have two shows today and two shows on Thursday. If you're local, you can get tickets for only $15! Christmas show begins November 1! Have a great day and remember, spread love around! Thanks, Sister Act: The Musical!
