Life Is Like A Game Of Baseball
I was watching the Braves game tonight (another loss) and started thinking that some of us live life like a game of baseball. The object of the game in baseball is to get around the bases more often than your opponent. Some of us are so concerned that we’re not going to outscore our opponent in life. Our opponents are the people that live next door, our friends, and the people we compete with.
In baseball, a runner has an opportunity to steal a base. A stolen base puts a runner closer to the goal…making it around the bases to score a run. Many people live life like they are going to steal a portion of it. They are so concerned with THEIR goal in life, they take every opportunity to get ahead, regardless of who’s standing in front of them. Regardless of who they may hurt or run over in the process.
In baseball, a curve ball requires an adjustment by the hitter. The hitter has to stay back and try to hit the ball where it’s pitched. We all have curve balls in life. They may come in the way of a surprise expense or a sickness within the family. What we do with these ‘curve balls’ is important because they can send us back to the dugout with a strikeout if we’re not careful.
In baseball, the coach has a chance to go to the bullpen when the pitcher’s not doing very well. In life, we have an opportunity to rely on some back up as well. We have an opportunity to call on the best closer in the game…Christ. We need to put the ball in His hands and allow Him to take control of the game.
I believe that a lot of us are also running around in circles trying the make it around the bases. We have so much to get done and so little time to do it. We get so fixated on the task at hand, we forget that our life is a season and not just a single game. Take a 7th inning stretch in life. Take time to get fixated upon the eternal, not the immediate. Take life one step at at time. It’s the bottom of the 9th, we’re on second and Christ is about to drive us home! Let’s live like we win!
